There's a movement going on now that is gaining momentum. I love the solitary that I see across platforms. I truly hope this comradery continues. When we ban together, there is no end to what we can accomplish. But why stop at one day? Why not keep that energy going throughout the year?
Have you heard about the 24-hour economic blackout on 2/28? If not, do a quick Google search.
Below are 7 ways to" shop" and still make a difference!
Buy nothing groups:
Whether in your area or online, some lovely people are willing to part with items for free. You can also offer items that you no longer use. Do a Facebook search to find a group near you.
Facebook Marketplace:
I can't tell you how many items I have purchased and sold online. Since you're on here scrolling anyway, you might as well have fun and "shop" too! It's a great place to make some extra cash by selling things you no longer need.
Second-hand stores, thrift stores, and consignment shops:
Every neighborhood has them, and the proceeds go to some wonderful programs. This is how to shop guilt-free and help your community at the same time.
Family, friends, and neighbors:
Ask around. The odds that someone has something you need are high. Share items instead of buying new ones. This can be anything from a cup of sugar to a tree trimmer.
Garage, yard, and estate sales:
Besides being something fun to do on the weekend, there are so many things you can find at garage sales that you can't find in a store. The thrill is in the hunt!
Small and local businesses:
Stay local, save gas, help a business, and shop purposely. Your purchase means much more to a small business owner than a big-box store owner.
Use what you have:
My mom likes to call this "Shopping at home." It's a great place to start to see if you even need to shop in the first place. It's amazing what we can find if we look at and appreciate what we already have.
The benefits of sharing, helping local businesses, and giving items a second life extend far beyond one day. You are keeping items out of landfills, allowing small businesses to thrive, and creating communities, all while making a statement. It's a win/win/win.
Think about the bigger picture and how we can make a difference if we all stick together, it is quite extraordinary.
We can and will do this!
Please share so the word gets out!
